Using Fonts to Create an Effective PDF Design

Choosing the best fitting font can be crucial to the creation of an effective PDF design. Fonts play a very important role in helping the designer achieve their goal of setting a certain tone and visual aesthetic, as well as ensuring the readability and legibility of the content. The overall look and appeal of your PDF design can completely change depending on your use of font.

This is why Expressa’s PDF builder provides you with an extensive collection of fonts, making any style of design easy to pull off! This guide will help you learn about and get better at efficiently utilizing fonts to create the desired look for your PDF design, as well as how to change fonts in Expressa.

Choosing The Right Font Style

The two main types of font are serif and sans serif. Serif fonts can convey professionalism, elegance and tradition, while sans-serif fonts often feel more modern and clean.

Monospaced fonts are great for technical documents when character alignment is crucial. They can also create a subtle retro feel in design, adding a functional yet distinct look.

Display fonts work best for headlines and titles, adding bold visual impact and brand personality. Used sparingly, they highlight special content like callouts or quotes, ensuring legibility without overwhelming the design.

Use a handwriting font from our collection if you’re creating more of a delicate, refined or romantic style of design.

Consistent hierarchy is key, so it’s good to establish a clear distinction between headings, subheadings, and body text with varied font sizes and weights.

To create visual interest, you can use two fonts that are complementary to each other. For example, using one font for the heading and the other for the body text.

However, in most cases, avoid using more than two different fonts in one PDF document as to not disrupt the overall visual harmony and cohesiveness of the typography in your design.
