Adding Margins to Your Designs

In graphic design, a margin refers to the blank area around the edges of either a printed, digital document, layout or page. There are various purposes that margins serve, such as enhancing the appearance of the content, making it easier to read, and preventing the text from being too close to the page edges. By utilizing margins, designers are able to improve the layout that does not only look good but works well as well.

In Expressa, adding margins is easy as pie! Follow this guide to discover how to add the necessary space between the elements to achieve the professional look and feel for your PDF designs.

How your designs can go from cramped and overloaded to professional and elegant

There are two ways of accessing the margins tool inside of Expressa. First way starts by selecting the desired object in the Layout panel on the left side, after which, the properties layout will show the margins option at the start of it. You can edit the margins on any side of your element.

The second way of finding the margins panel is by simply selecting the desired element you’d like to edit and find at the top of the properties panel a margins adjustment tool. Notice how here, we have two numbers to edit:

- Red color is for the margins

- Green color is for padding (read more about padding here)

For your designs to look professional, the margins must be just right - not to tight nor too spaced out. This can be achieved by adjusting the margins in relation to the content and layout. They should provide enough breathing space for the content but also visually show what elements are closer to eachother contextually.

PRO TIP: Maintaining consistent width of margins in your design creates visual harmony and coherence.
